Effect of Pore Space Stagnant Zones on Interphase Mass Transfer in Porous Media, for Two-Phase Flow Conditions

Abstract Interphase mass transfer is an important solute transport process in two-phase flow porous media. During flow, hydrodynamically stagnant and flowing zones are formed, with the ones being adjacent to interfaces through which interphase happens. Due existence of these vicinity interface, coefficient decreases a certain extent. There seems be phenomenological correlation between extent zone which, however, not yet fully understood. In this study, phase-field method-based continuous species model applied simulate dissolved from immobile, residual, non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) aqueous phase. Both scenarios, simple cavity medium, investigated. The effects rates on significantly reduced when diffusion length larger. It found that saturation can proxy overall terminal menisci medium system. early-stage continuously due depletion small NAPL clusters direct contact water. long-term mainly happens associated large larger lengths, determined by saturation.
